Welcome to the Industrial Automation Laboratory (IAL) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Founded in 1988, under the directorship of Prof. Clarence W. de Silva to support the NSERC-BC Packers Chair in Industrial Automation, IAL carries out research and development in the following areas:

  • Intelligent Control
  • Robotics including Multi-robot Cooperation
  • Process Automation
  • Control System Instrumentation (Sensors and Actuators)
  • Mechatronics including Evolutionary Design
  • Machine Health Monitoring

Note: The last two areas are the theme of the on-going Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Mechatronics and Industrial Automation, which is also linked to the Applied Science Research Centre.
