Industrial Automation Laboratory Overview Welcome to the Industrial Automation Laboratory (IAL) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This lab was established in 1988, with Prof. Clarence W. de Silva as Director, primarily to carry out research and development activities related to the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Research Chair in Industrial Automation. The Senior NSERC-BC Packers Research Chair position has been held by Prof. de Silva. Funding for the activities of the laboratory has been provided by many government and industrial organizations including B.C. Packers, Ltd., NSERC, UBC, B.C. Hydro, Advanced System Institute of B.C., Science Council of B.C., Ministry of Environment of B.C., National Research Council (NRC) of Canada, the Canadian Network of Centers of Excellence: The Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (IRIS), and Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). We are affiliated with the Institute of Computing, Information, and Cognitive Systems (ICICS) and are located in ICICS Room 061 and Room 065, at 2366 Main Mall, UBC Campus, in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada. There is extensive international collaboration with other universities; particularly, the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), and the Sri Lanka Institute of information technology (SLIIT). Main Goal
The main goal of the Industrial Automation Laboratory is the design, development and application of advanced technologies for industrial automation, with emphasis on mechatronics, robotics, machine vision, intelligent control, and instrumentation including sensing and actuation.
