Thermofluids
The faculty in the Thermofluids Group includes professors who research everything from pulp pumps to clean energy. The faculty group consists Nima Atabaki, Kendal Bushe, Martin Davy, Robert Evans, Ian Frigaard, Sheldon Green, Dana Grecov, Murray Hodgson, Walter Mérida, Jon Mikkelsen, Carl Ollivier-Gooch, James Olson, Steven Rogak, Martha Salcudean, and Boris Stoeber. A few of the projects currently underway are outlined below.
Dr. Nima Atabaki — Heat and Mass Transfer
Current Projects: Loop heat pipes, two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer, effective thermal conductivity of fluid saturated sintered powder metal plates, and HVAC systems.

Dr. Kendal Bushe — Turbulent Combustion
Current Projects: Numerical simulation of turbulent combustion in internal combustion engines and gas turbines, model development for turbulence/chemistry interactions, chemical kinetic mechanism development, and renewable fuels for heavy-duty transportation and stationary power applications.

Dr. Martin H. Davy — Applied Thermodynamics
Current Projects: Sustainable energy conversion, increased IC engine efficiency through improved combustion chamber design, and partially stratified-charge combustion in IC engines.

Dr. Robert L. Evans — Engines
Current Projects: Development of energy conversion systems, research in relationships among combustion chamber design, turbulence generation, and engine performance, turbulence reducing combustion chamber for spark-ignited engines, and partially stratified-charge engine combustion concept.

Dr. Ian Frigaard — Mathematical Modeling
Current Projects: Ongoing research in shear instabilities, Rayleigh-Bénard flows, bubble propagation, particle
sedimentation, visco-plastic lubrication, and Taylor-Couette instabilities, recent subjects in industrial mathematical modeling have included InSb crystal growth, injection molding, and waxy crude oil pipeline restarts.

Dr. Dana Grecov—Fluid Mechanics
Current Projects: Computational and experimental methods to analyze complex fluid flow in journal bearings, design of new lubricants and biolubricants, rheostructural and hydrodynamic study of synovial fluid, numerical simulation of industrial flows, Non-Newtonian fluid flows occurring in processing and primary industries.

Dr. Sheldon I. Green — Fluid Mechanics
Current Projects:
Developing a model of the fibre deposition and dewatering process in
paper making, spraying of non-Newtonian fluids, minimizing electrical
power consumption in paper mills by improving pulp pump efficiency, and
measuring and reducing snow friction of skis (in conjunction with the
Canadian Olympic Committee).

Dr. Murray Hodgson — Acoustics
Current Projects: Prediction of sound fields in workrooms, measurement of the acoustical characteristics of materials/surfaces, inverse methods for room-parameter and noise-source determination, acoustics and noise control in 'green' buildings and of 'green' roofs, active noise control, acoustics of learning spaces, aircraft run-up noise prediction and control, auralization (acoustical virtual reality).

Dr. Walter Mérida — Clean Energy Systems
Current Projects: Energy systems (climate disruption), fuel cell technology (durability and reliability), and hydrogen infrastructures (refueling stations for fuel cell vehicles).

Current Projects: Developing a vertical axis tidal turbine for power generation, and collaborating with First Nations to develop live capture fishing technologies.

Current Projects: Developing high-order accurate methods for compressible, turbulent flows, with applications in aerodynamics, aerodynamic optimization, and unstructured mesh generation from CAD data.

Current Projects: Reducing electrical energy consumption in pulping, developing a mathematical model of fibre
orientation and concentration in turbulent flow, and design of a high performance, low energy pulp screen rotor.

Current Projects: Development of simple, low-emissions fuel injectors for heavy-duty engines, determining the
optimal balance between thermal comfort and energy consumption in buildings.

Current Projects: Developing a mathematical model for multi-phase flows, and applying models to fluidized beds and jet/bed interaction in fluidized beds.
