Industry Advisory Committee
Outline
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has set up an advisory committee to assist in responding and adapting to changes in the industry and other areas outside the university due to technological advances, economic, societal and cultural shifts, the increasing need for accountability and efficiency, and changes in the economy and market. This is to ensure that the Department is responsive to these changes by securing connections to the engineering profession, industry, and government.
Mandate
To provide advice to the head of the Department on matters relating to the Department's activities including its strategic initiatives and future directions, and broader issues involving academic programs, teaching, research, and professional service.
Membership and Meetings
The Committee is made up of:
- Six to ten members, including senior leaders from industry and academia and professional organizations
- The Head (Chair of Committee), Assistant Heads, Undergraduate Advisor and Rota Group Chairs
- The Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science
The Committee meets twice a year in Vancouver, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. The meeting agenda and background materials are distributed to Committee members ahead of each meeting. Meetings of the Committee are attended by its members and guests may participate in selected deliberations or activities of the Committee. The general meeting format will consist of a 3-hour meeting followed by a reception. All faculty and staff members of the Department are invited to the reception.
Each external Committee member serves for a three-year term, renewable once. As a means of establishing a staggered membership, the inital members serve for either two or three year terms, renewable once.
